International Youth Internship Program (IYIP)

Overview

CIDA's International Youth Internship Program offers post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain valuable international development work experience. The program is part of the Career Focus stream of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES) which aims to help young people make the school-to-work transition.

There are four objectives to CIDA's International Youth Internship Program:

• To provide eligible youth with international experience, skills and knowledge that will prepare them for future employment in a knowledge-based economy;
• To increase employment opportunities by promoting awareness among Canadian organizations of the advantages of integrating young Canadian professionals into their structures and programs;
• To provide opportunities for Canadians to increase their awareness, deepen their understanding and engage in international development;
• To contribute to the advancement of CIDA's mandate (reducing poverty, promoting human rights and increased sustainable development) and to meeting CIDA's priorities for Official Development Assistance.

ICAD's strategy is to link organizations in Canada with similar organizations abroad. Consequently, each intern will be attached to a Canadian host agency two months - one month before and one month after the overseas placement. The Canadian host will be responsible for the recruitment and selection process.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program, an intern must be:

• A Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
• A post-secondary graduate - graduate of a degree or diploma program from a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP (collège d'enseignement général et professionnel);
• Out of school;
• Between the ages of 19 and 30;
• Unemployed or underemployed;
• Legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Be available for 6 to 12 consecutive months;
• Be in good health and undertake to obtain appropriate immunizations and arrange for travel / health / life insurance, as well as arranging travel to the host country and satisfying all visa requirements;
• Have the appropriate education, training or expertise (see internships listings for specific criteria);
• Demonstrate an interest in international issues and openness to different cultures and situations;
• Not have previously participated in a youth Employment Strategy internship program.
