Factsheets
Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a Potential HIV Prevention Method (January 2010)
Research into new prevention technologies (NPT) is a critical part of comprehensive HIV prevention. One technology currently being tested in clinical trials is pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an experimental technology that would use antiretrovirals (ARVs) to protect HIV-negative people from HIV infection. This fact sheet provides an overview of PrEP research and raises some of the concerns and unanswered questions that require discussion among a broad group of stakeholders.
Tools, Trends and New Technologies in HIV Prevention (January 2010)
There are a number of global efforts underway to develop new technologies to prevent HIV. This fact sheet provides a brief definition of each of the potential prevention tools being researched, and gives an overview of the current state of research; provides an overview of the prevention technologies that we currently have at our disposal and summarizes recent findings about these technologies; outlines research into prevention technologies that have had unsuccessful results; and summarizes Canada's role in research of new HIV prevention technologies, and the role that advocates can play in this research.
Impact of AIDS Vaccine Research on Health Systems Strengthening (November 2008)
This fact sheet examines the impact that AIDS vaccine research is having on health systems strengthening in five key areas: the training and retention of human resources, infrastructure development, improved regulatory processes, improved health services and enhanced HIV services.
Current Issues in HIV Prevention (September 2008)
This factsheet looks at some of the current issues and challenges relating to the scaling up of HIV prevention efforts, both domestically and internationally.
Presentations/Workshops
Workshop: Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a Potential HIV Prevention Method
On November 20th, ICAD held a workshop on PrEP as a potential HIV prevention method. The workshop included presentations from individuals engaged in PrEP trials in Peru and Kenya. The workshop provided Canadian civil society, researchers and government representatives with an opportunity to learn about and discuss PrEP, its potential impact on Canadians, and the role Canadians can play in the international dialogue on PrEP.

Reports
New prevention technologies and vaccine development: Satellite meeting report (March, 2010)
Research and clinical trials of new HIV prevention technologies, such as vaccines, microbicides and pre-exposure prophylaxis, provide hope for more effective prevention of HIV transmission. Communities are aware of research developments and need timely, accurate information which they can use to inform and engage their members. In response to this need, the Canadian AIDS Society, the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development, in partnership with the Coalition des organismes Québécois de lutte contre le sida, hosted a one-day meeting in Montreal on March 4, 2010 with 74 registered participants from a variety of communities.
