The Canadian Labour Congress Step-up Global G8/G20 Petition Campaign for Universal Access to HIV/AIDS Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support
The 2010 Muskoka Summit was meant to be the year the G8 celebrated achieving its life saving promise to provide Universal Access to HIV & AIDS Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support by 2010. Yet, globally, prevention services only reach 20% of people in need and even less among those who are the most vulnerable, including women and children. For every two people starting treatment, another five become infected with the virus.
As long as the promise to achieve Universal Access remains broken, millions of people will suffer despite knowing what can be done to prevent and treat HIV & AIDS.
That is why the global petition drive launched one month ago by the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) and its affiliate unions, in solidarity with civil society groups, is now being stepped up, leading to the Summits in June.
The aim is to collect as many thousands of signatures as possible to convince the G8/G20 to advance Universal Access issues of the Summit agenda. Provisional results will be presented to Canadian parliamentarians at a G8 & HIV/AIDS event hosted by the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions on May 25th, and final results will be communicated to the G8 directly.
