Overview
The International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative provides opportunities for Aboriginal youth to participate in international internships in developing countries. This initiative is part of CIDA's Global Citizens Program. The program aims to:
- Improve the skills of young aboriginal women and men to engage in international development in the field
- Enhance the awareness and understanding of international development issues among young aboriginal women and men
- Increase the capacity of young aboriginal women and men interns to promote international development work in Canada
- Develop the essential skills for employment of young aboriginal women and men
ICAD's strategy is to link organizations in Canada with similar organizations abroad. These internships are 6 months in duration (2 months in Canada and 4 months overseas). Each intern will be attached to a Canadian host agency for two months - one month before and one month after the overseas placement. The Canadian host will be responsible for the recruitment and selection process.
These internship positions will begin with pre-departure training in January, 2012 and interns will leave for their overseas posts in February, 2012.
Eligibility
Interns must meet the following eligibility criteria to participate in an Aboriginal Youth Internship:
- Hold a secondary school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED). Please note that youth currently enrolled in university studies, or in possession of a college diploma or university degree,are not eligible for 2011-2012 internships opportunities. Youth currently enrolled in a colelge or CÉGEP program are eligible for internships, provided they will not graduate before the completion of their internships.
- be between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of final selection (i.e. at the time of signature of contract between the intern and the Canadian organization);
- be legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizens or permanent residents); and
- be of Aboriginal affiliation and willing to sign the CIDA form of self-declaration attesting to this affiliation (required after intern selection takes place).
