The following is adapted from an article that originally appeared in the Global Fund Observer on October 19, 2016.

I had the privilege of attending my first Global Fund Replenishment meeting last month in Montreal. The overall feel was of celebration and optimism. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the Global Fund and its track record of saving lives and averting new infections, and backed up his talk with a US$720 million pledge to kick things off. The various other heads of state, health ministers, and private sector leaders all commended praised the Fund as well. … Read more

At the conclusion of the 5th Global Fund Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Montreal, Canada, on September 16 to 17, the Global Fund announced that pledges totalling US$12.9 billion were made. This is almost US$1 billion more than what was raised at the previous replenishment conference in 2013 and represents a significant commitment to fighting the three diseases over the coming three years. But will it be enough to end the three epidemics for good?

At the beginning of this … Read more

Picture this scenario: An individual living with HIV in British Columbia, “Doug” (whose name has been changed for privacy), was being “shuffled around” through care. As a result, he had grown tired and had mostly given up on treating his HIV. Sadly, he had begun telling family and friends that he wouldn’t be around much longer. Can you see a solution to a situation like this?

There was an answer for Doug . An outreach worker, with the province of B.C.’s STOP® … Read more

On a rainy weekend in mid-September global leaders vowed to help “end HIV/AIDS for good” by pledging a total of US$12.9 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria during the Fifth Replenishment Conference , hosted by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The Grandmothers Advocacy Network applauds this commitment and Canada’s leadership in making this happen. However, we are far from “ending it for good.” Indeed, this laudable goal will not be achieved without a deliberate effort to include people of all genders and ages — including older women.

Older … Read more

There is much to celebrate as the Fifth Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria concluded in Montreal this past weekend. Global leaders pledged over US$12.9 billion dollars which will help save 8 million lives and stop an additional 300 million new infections worldwide by 2019, as well as contribute to ending these deadly diseases as epidemics by 2030. This is truly a promising horizon.

The discussions that took place in Montreal evoked for me a memory from … Read more

Try for a moment to put yourself in the shoes of an adolescent. Adolescents aren’t children and they aren’t adults, either. It is a time of deep emotional and physical upheavals. Relationships are often the centre of your changing world. So imagine if you can how it must feel to be an adolescent living with HIV. I was one of them and I count myself lucky to be here to tell my story.

In May, I met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to talk about how I was able to overcome the challenges of living with HIV … Read more

In many parts of Africa, there are women who have no way of negotiating the choice, or use, of contraceptives with a partner. There are women in relationships who have no option of refusing sex, nor the power to require use of a condom. While HIV infections among the general population of eastern and southern Africa have been plummeting, it has resurfaced and started to grow among adolescent girls and young women.

It is clear that sufficient effort has been placed in effective strategies to reduce the raging HIV … Read more

The most vivid memory I have of my mum is her groaning during the last few minutes of her life, as she battled AIDS.

I was pre-school aged and about to lose my mother. My mum had five boys, each with a different father. I was born third. At the time of her death, she was “married” to a Kenyan man, the father of my younger brother. She was travelling back from Kenya to Uganda when her condition deteriorated. She never made it home.

Back in Kenya, our oldest brother was waiting for our return. We … Read more
